Recall Blueprint
Build a bomb-proof recall your dog responds to everywhere — in the park, off-leash, even around other dogs.
Does This Sound Familiar?
You call your dog and they completely ignore you — or come back only when they feel like it.
Your recall only works at home. Outside, it falls apart with the first distraction.
You’ve tried treats and voice commands but nothing sticks consistently.
The Habit Framework for Recall Blueprint
Cue
A unique, high-value recall word (not „come“) used only in training sessions. Paired exclusively with the highest-value reward your dog knows.
Routine
Two short sessions per day: one low-distraction warmup (indoors or yard) and one progressive outdoor session. Total: 5–10 minutes.
Reward
Jackpot reward — multiple treats, play, praise — every single time the dog returns on cue. Never punish a dog that came back, no matter how late.
7-Step System
Choose Your Recall Word
Pick a unique word like „Here!“ or „Touch!“ — never used in any other context. This keeps it high-value and precise.
Charge the Cue Indoors
Say the word once, reward with a jackpot treat. 10 repetitions, zero distractions. Do this for 3 days until the association is rock solid.
Add Distance Indoors
Move to different rooms. Call from across the house. Still zero distractions. Gradually increase distance over 5–7 days.
Introduce the Long Line
Move to a garden or low-distraction outdoor area. Use a 5–10m long line for safety. Call, reward massively when dog returns.
Add Mild Distractions
Introduce low-level distractions (another person, mild smells). Keep distance generous at first. Set your dog up to succeed.
Proof at the Park
Use the long line. Start at the edge of the park. Build confidence at each distraction level before progressing.
Maintain with a Jackpot Policy
Always reward a recall — even at home, even when it’s been months. This habit keeps the behaviour bulletproof for life.
⏱️ Daily 5–10 Minute Micro-Routine
Warm-up: 5 indoor recalls. Charge the cue with jackpot treats. Fast, fun, high energy.
Outdoor session on long line. 3–5 recalls. Increase distance or distraction by one small step.
Free play or sniff break as a reward. End on a positive note — never drill to failure.
1 bonus recall from another room at home. Jackpot reward. Takes 30 seconds.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Repeating the recall word when the dog doesn’t respond — this teaches them to ignore it.
Using „come“ for anything other than the trained recall (bath time, ending fun, etc.).
Rewarding with only mild praise when the dog returns slowly — the reward must match the behaviour.
Practising only at home and wondering why it doesn’t work at the park.
Skipping the long-line phase and letting the dog off-leash too early.
